How to Restore a Wood Fence

A fence that is half dirty and half clean.

1. Apply a Fence Cleaner

To begin the fence cleaning process, we start by applying a specially formulated fence cleaner. This cleaner is essential for eliminating mold, mildew, and any organic growth that can weaken the wood over time. Additionally, it helps lift and strip existing stain, preparing the surface for a fresh coat of stain. Skipping this important cleaning step compromises the new stain, as residue and old stain layers prevent the fresh stain from fully penetrating the wood. The new stain will also fail prematurely, reducing both the durability and aesthetic quality of the fence.

2. Pressure Wash and Brighten the Fence

Next, we gently pressure wash the fence using low pressure to avoid damaging the wood. Using too much pressure can fur the wood, leading to a blown-out grainy pattern. There's also a risk of compacting the wood and leaving stripes if too much pressure is used. After the wood has been pressure washed, a wood brightener is applied to rebalance the PH level of the wood and restore its natural color. This brightening step brings out a fresher, more vibrant look, enhancing the wood’s appearance before staining.

3. Stain or Paint the Fence to Seal It

Once the fence is clean and dry, we apply a stain or paint to protect it from moisture and UV damage. Water-based stains are easy to remove and upkeep in the future. In comparison, oil-based stains tend to last longer but are much harder to remove when the fence needs to be re-stained. Generally, we recommend sealing with a water-based stain and re-staining every 2-3 years. Maintaining the stain on your fence helps extend the lifespan of the wood and improves curb appeal.
