Types of Decks and How to Clean Them

A half clean and half dirty wooden deck.

How to Clean a Wood Deck

We wet the wood and apply sodium metasilicate to the surface. Then we pressure wash the wood in the direction of the planks using low pressure. Correctly pressure washing the wood avoids striping and furring, both of which cause damage that must be sanded out. Finally, we rebalance the PH level of the wood using oxalic acid.

How to Clean a Trex Deck

It's recommended to clean Trex deck using soap, water, and a soft bristle brush. That works for lightly soiled Trex decking, but most Trex decks require a stronger solution, like sodium hypochlorite. Pressure washing a Trex deck can damage it, which is why we choose to soft wash Trex decks instead. After soft washing the deck, we enhance the color with oxalic acid.

How to Clean a Composite Deck

Trex deck is a type of composite deck, so the cleaning process for other composite decks is similar. Composite decks are often made of recycled materials like plastic film and recycled wood. Composite deck brands use various plastic to wood ratios, affecting the appearance, feel, and maintenance required. Properly cleaning your composite deck can prevent it from fading prematurely and extend its lifespan.
